With every 1000m from the crust to the centre of the earth, the temperature rises by 35 C. In the mantle, the temperature reaches 3000 C and at the core it is 7000 C.

The main elements that make up the crust are oxygen, silicon, aluminium, iron, calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium.

The Mohole project was undertaken in the 1960s by American and Russian scientists to drill through the ocean floor to reach the mantle. It was later abandoned because of increasing costs.
